False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of part of the human kidney, showing the glomerulus (orange), which together with the Bowman's capsule (gold) form the renal corpuscle, 1 of the 2 major parts of the nephron, the functional unit of the kidney. Part of the Bowman's capsule has been removed to reveal the tightly-packed capillary loops that extend over the surface of the glomerulus. The renal corpuscle is associated with the filtration of blood plasma, which passes from the glomerular capillaries into the renal tubule (not visible), where the selective reabsorption of water, inorganic ions & other molecules occurs.
