Hepatocytes have a polyhedral shape and are arranged in layers, called hepatic laminae, typically one-cell thick. Part of a layer, formed by three hapatocytes, is seen running from top right to bottom left. Hepatocytes secrete bile which carries away waste products from the liver and helps the breakdown of fats in the small intestine. Bile is drained away in the bile canaliculi (green) and is stored in the gall- bladder. A macrophage (Kupffer cell, yellow) is seen surrounded by a few red blood cells.
