Microplicae of oesophagus: false-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the lining of the oesophagus (gullet), showing microplicae or microridges througout the surface. The oesophagus is lined with a stratified, non- keratinized epithelium that is adapted for strength & protection in its task of conveying food to the stomach. The narrow valleys created by the microplicae provide space to act as a reservoir for the mucous secreted by the epithelium. This mucous lubricates the lining of the gullet & assists the passage of food. Magnification: x2600 at 6x7cm size.
