Gastric gland: false-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the mucous membrane lining the stomach, featuring a single, circular gastric gland. The glands secrete gastric juice (hydrochloric acid & enzyme pepsin) and a protective mucous, derived from the simple, columnar cells (moss-like) that comprise the mucous membrane. Remnants of stomach contents appear yellow; one bit is over the opening to the gland. Gastric glands are formed by simple invagination or tubular ingrowth of this mucosa into the underlying lamina propria. Magnification: x550 at 6x7cm size. Different colour version as of Plate 12 in Viaggio". This image yellow debris on jade blue, Plate 12 pale violet on bright green."
