Light micrograph of a section of human sublingual gland, one of three pairs (submandibular & parotid) constituting the major salivary glands (exocrine glands). They are found on the floor of the mouth at either side of the tongue. The sublingual glands are divided into lobules each consisting of predominately mucous secreting units (white) & a few serous secreting units, both of which are continuous with secretory ducts. Connective tissue (seen here) runs between the lobules carrying blood vessels, nerves & excretory ducts. Saliva, a watery secretion, contains enzymes, which initiate the digestive process. Magnification X30 (at 35mm size).
