Healthy brain. Coloured magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of a coronal section of a human head showing a healthy brain. The brain's cerebrum is divided into left and right hemispheres, each with a folded appearance. It is the largest part of the brain, and controls conscious thoughts. The dark areas in each hemisphere are ventricles, spaces containing cerebro-spinal fluid. The outer parts of the ears can be seen on either side of the head at lower left and right. MRI provides slice images of the body by using radio waves and a magnetic field to provoke tissues to emit signals depending on their composition. It is a useful diagnostic aid, particularly for studying nervous tissue.
