Brain tissue. Light micrograph of a section through the cerebellum of the brain. The cerebellar cortex is composed of two layers; an outer molecular layer (yellow) and an inner granular layer (brown). Together they make up grey matter, which contains the highly folded central core of the cerebellum. This core is white matter (orange) and contains densely-packed nerve fibres. The cerebellum is part of the hindbrain and it controls fine movement co-ordination, balance and muscle tone. Damage to this area leads to motor or movement difficulties. Mag: x14 when 10cm wide.
