Neutrophils, also known as polymorphonuclear white blood cells or polymorphs, have a granular cytoplasm (green). They are involved in protecting the body against infection by engulfing and digesting invading microorganisms by phagocytosis. These highly mobile cells migrate to areas of tissue damage where they tackle microorganisms and cell debris. However after a burst of activity they degenerate as the special enzymes they use are quickly depleted. Defunct neutrophils form the majority of pus. Magnification: x2750 at 35mm size.
