False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a single neutrophil, the most common type of white blood cell. A prominent feature of a neutrophil is its multi-lobed nucleus (in red, green/yellow). A mature cell usually has five lobes, connected by fine strands of nuclear material. In the cytoplasm, spherical membrane- bound granules appear in red. Neutrophils have an important role in the acute inflammatory response to tissue damage, mobilising to engulf & clear-up cell debris & bacteria. Defunct neutrophils form the main component of pus.
