Liver artery. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the interior of an artery in the liver. Lymphocytes (white blood cells, red) are adhering to the arterial wall. The liver contains a large population of lymphocytes, which are needed to protect the liver from its constant exposure to antigens from the gut. These antigens enter the liver through the portal vein. Magnification: x1120 at 10 centimetres wide.
