Garden of Eden. Engraving of Adam and Eve, the supposed first-ever people, in the Garden of Eden. Adam and Eve are taking an apple from the Tree of Knowledge (upper centre) which was offered by the Devil in the form of a serpent. Adam and Eve were later cast out from the Garden of Eden into the world for eating the fruit and had to fend for themselves. The story of Adam and Eve is found in Genesis, the first book of the Bible. Also seen are the four rivers of the Garden of Eden (Pison, Gihon, Hiddenkel, and Euphrates) running from the tree of knowledge. Image taken from the Mappa Mundi, a 13th century map interpreting the world in geographical and spiritual terms.
