Cauterizing a wound, coloured historical artwork. An iron has been heated in the fire, and is being used to burn and seal the tissue of the leg wound. This is intended to stop the loss of blood, which could otherwise be fatal. Original artwork is from a field book of military surgery, Veldt Boeck van der Chirurgia Scheel-Hans, Amsterdam, 1593. This is a later edition of a book by Hans von Gersdorff (1455-1529), a military surgeon whose widely-used books were based on his own 40-year-experience of numerous battles.
