Engraving by J. Wechtlin of a patient (right) having the wound on his thigh cauterised. Cauterisation is a method of stopping bleeding by burning the flesh in the region of the wound. In this scene a hot iron is being used, without anaesthetic. Between the two men is the fire where the irons are heated.
