Woodcut of a patient having his leg amputated. This is before the days of anaesthetic, instead he is blindfolded so at least he cannot see what is going on. This is the first picture published of an amputation, it comes from the Feldtbuch der Wundartznei (Field Book of Wound Surgery), by Hans von Gersdorf, a German army surgeon; published in Strasbourg, 1530.
