Woodcut of a patient having a circular hole drilled into the bones of his skull to relieve pressure on the brain. The sawlike instrument used is a trephine, and the procedure is known as trephining. The patient is clearly conscious as it is before the days of anaesthetic. This picture comes from the Book of Wound Surgery of Jerome of Brunswick (also called Brunschwig) published 1497.
