Field hospital during the American civil war. Wounded soldiers lie on the ground as the field hospital at Savage Station, Virginia, struggles to cope with the casualties following a battle. Major advances in hospital organisation and hygiene were made during the American Civil War but field hospitals were still often unsanitory and ill- equipped. Photographed in June 1862 during the Peninsula Campaign.
