Burning of houses where plague had occurred during the last world-wide pandemic of plague which started in China in the 1890s. The disease is caused by a bacteria Yesinia pestis and transmitted to humans from rats by the bite of an infected plague-rat flea. Several species of fleas are implicated including Xenopsylla cheopis. This outbreak of plague spread to the west through the trade routes.
