Hippocrates and the X-rays", after a caricature by Vincent in France, 1920. Hippocrates (460BC- 370BC) is regarded as the father of medicine. He established the first recorded medical school, and set a standard of medical ethics reflected by the Hippocratic Oath still taken by modern medical students. The Hippocratic school believed in the moderation of diet and the efficacy of cleanliness. Disease was looked upon as a purely physical phenomenon, resulting from an imbalance of the body's vital fluids, or humors (blood, phlegm, black bile and yellow bile). The caricature depicts this teaching being confounded by more modern diagnostic methods."
