Tuberculosis ward. Western-oriented Tibetan doctor (at centre), assisted by foreign volunteer doctors, makes his rounds on a tuberculosis (TB) ward in India. The doctors and patient (at right) wear masks to prevent the spread of TB infection. Tuberculosis is caused by the bacillus Mycobacter- ium tuberculosis. It is spread in airborne drop- lets breathed out by sufferers which are then inhaled by fresh victims. TB is treated by the use of antibiotics. The disease is a major problem in poor regions as it thrives in conditions of malnutrition and overcrowding. Photographed at the Delek Hospital in the Tibetan expatriate community of Dharamsala, India.
