Female sterilisation involves stopping the egg from reaching the uterus by sealing or cutting the fallopian tube. In most cases the procedure is irreversible and so the woman must be sure that she does not want any more children. In men, sterilisation involves cutting the two vas deferens, the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles, a procedure known as a vasectomy.
