MODEL RELEASED. Recovery position. Trainee first aider puts a volunteer into the recovery position. Unconscious casualties who are breathing should always be placed in the recovery position. The head is tilted back to keep the airway open and prevent the tongue from blocking the throat. The head's low position allows fluid to drain from the mouth preventing the risk of choking. The bent arm and leg keep the casualty propped in a secure and comfortable position. The neck and back are kept in a straight line. Classes teaching the recovery position and other aspects of first aid are run by volunteer organizations such as The Red Cross and St. John Ambulance.
