Electrodes taped to his face, head & neck are connected to the polysomnograph, a hybrid of an electrocardiograph (ECG), an electroencephalograph (EEG) and an electromyograph (EMG). The print-out provides a record of the electrical activity of the heart (from the ECG), brain (from the EEG) and muscle activity in the face and neck (from the EMG) throughout the period of sleep. Research topics include epilepsy, effects of sleep deprivation & drugs; novel sleeping drugs, for example.
