Castniid moth larva. Scientist extracting a sample of haemolymph (body fluid) from a moth larva for medical research. This moth is native to French Guiana in South America. It is a type of sun moth, the adults of which fly during daytime. The larvae develop underground or inside trees. The haemolymph of this and other insects is being screened in search of new antibiotic, anti- inflammatory, anti-viral and anti-cancer drugs by a company called Entomed, based in Strasbourg in France. Between 1999 and 2003, Entomed analysed more than 175 novel molecules with potential medical effects.
