MODEL RELEASED. General practice nurse explaining the use of a contraceptive diaphragm (Dutch cap) to a patient at a well woman clinic. The diaphragm is a thin rubber dome, the rim of which contains a metal spring. It is inserted into the vagina prior to sexual intercourse and fits over the cervix, preventing sperm from entering the uterus. It is squeezed into a long, oval shape during insertion, but springs back into a circle once released, pressing against the walls of the vagina. Diaphragms come in ten different sizes and the correct size must be chosen for each individual. They should always be used in conjunction with a spermicidal cream or pessary. Models: Kay Roycroft (nurse), Deborah Speake.
