Cervical dysplasia CIN 2. Colposcopy of the cervix (centre) with CIN 2 dysplasia. This is the second stage in the possible development of cervical cancer. The cervix is swollen, and there is a discoloured area just around the os (cervical canal, at centre). The speculum (white) is holding back the vaginal wall. Dysplasia occurs when cell division of cervical stratified squamous epithelium is disrupted by abnormal cell growth. There are 3 stages in cervical dysplasia, ranging from mild (CIN 1) to moderate (CIN 2) to severe (CIN 3). Treatment depends on the severity of the disease, but may involve the removal of affected tissue by surgery.
