Opening circumcised vagina. Image 1 of 3. Preliminary examination of circumcised woman prior to surgery to reopen her vaginal passageway, enabling her to reproduce. The opening of the woman's urethra (for urination) is seen at upper centre. Below this the whole of the vaginal opening has been sealed to prevent sexual intercourse. This closing of the vagina is common in parts of Africa. Circumcision may lead to injuries during intercourse, an increased risk of injury in childbirth and psychological problems such as loss of sexual desire. There is no medical purpose for the procedure. See images M850/315 & M850/316 for later stages of procedure.
