Ovarian cancer: excised female reproductive organs, showing a cancerous ovary (left, black). The normal ovary is visible at right, as are the uterus (bottle-like) and the fallopian tubes, the result of the surgical procedure called radical hysterectomy. 75% of ovarian tumours are benign, although a proportion are hormonally-active & produce a range of symptoms from precocious puberty to postmenopausal bleeding. Treatment of ovarian cancer may involve a combination of surgery, radiotherapy & chemotherapy. The antimetabolite drug cisplatin is particularly effective.
