Tonquin beans (Dipteryx odorata). These beans are from a tropical tree found in the northern parts of South America. It has medicinal herbal uses. The active component is coumarin, and it is used for its aromatic, cardiac, tonic and narcotic effects. In large doses, it can paralyse the heart. Other parts of the beans are used to prepare tonquin butter, a popular product in the Netherlands.
