Angostura bark. Scoop of cut and dried angostura bark (Cusparia febrifuga). This tree is native to South America. The bark is used in herbal medicine as a stimulant tonic and purgative, and is used to treat diarrhoea, dysentry and fevers. It is used commercially as an ingrediant of bitter liquers, the active bitter ingredient being angosturin.
