MODEL RELEASED. Insulin injection. Seven year old boy suffering from diabetes mellitus , gives himself an insulin injection in the abdomen. The boy uses a novopen to administer the insulin. The novopen is a pen-like device which meters out the correct dose of insulin from portable cartridges. Insulin is a hormone made in the pancreas which converts blood sugar to energy. Diabetes is the condition where too little insulin is made. The consequence of this is the body uses fats as an alternative to sugar. This causes massive ketone build up leading to convulsions and coma. The treatment for diabetes is a strict diet and regular doses of insulin.
