Robot-aided surgery. Neurosurgeon uses a computer- controlled robot arm called a Magic Wand", during an operation to remove a brain tumour. The patient's brain is exposed (at lower right). In the background, a screen shows a number of computed tomography (CT) scans of the patient's head. CT scan data (or MRI scan data) of the head and tumour are fed into the robot's computer. When the tip of the hand-held "Magic Wand" is moved on the patient's brain, the exact position of the tumour can be found while visualising it on the screen. In this way, locating small tumours and surgically removing them is simplified & improved, with minimal damage to surrounding brain tissue."
