MODEL RELEASED. Immunoelectrophoresis being read by a laboratory technician. This is a technique that identifies antigens. A sample of blood serum is placed in a gel. An electric current is passed through the gel. Serum proteins move through the gel according to the difference in their individual electric charges. Antiserum, which contains antibodies against specific antigens, is placed in a slot alongside the gel. Precipitation lines form wherever the antibody in the slot meets its antigen in the blood serum sample. The results are used to identify different diseases, and monitor the progression of diseases.
