At right, the optician is seen looking into the eyepiece of the ophthalmoscope, a type of illuminating microscope, used to examine the interior of the eye. The instrument directs a fine beam of light into the eye and contains magnifying lenses which allow the optician to see the spot where the beam falls. Some serious eye disorders, such as glaucoma, are symptomless in the early stages and can only be detected through this type of examination of the eyes.
