A portable transducer is moved over the breast, while an image of breast tissue can be seen on the monitor. Ultrasound employs high-frequency sound waves which gives a two-dimensional image of a scanned tissue slice". In breast scanning it is used to distinguish between solid lumps and fluid- filled cysts. It is a technique usually used once a mammogram (X-ray) of the breast has revealed an abnormality. During the ultrasound scanning, a biopsy needle may then be directed into the cyst to obtain a tissue sample for testing."
