Hip surgery tools. The kidney-shaped dish at right contains blood-covered bone fragments. These have been chipped away from the patient's diseased hip joint using the tools seen at centre. As well as tools for removing bone, there is also a wooden mallet used to apply pressure to the tools. Bone is removed from both the femur (upper leg bone) and the pelvis parts of the hip joint, allowing an artificial hip joint to be inserted.
