The pain does not come from the brain itself, which contains no sensory nerves, but from the meninges around the brain and the scalp with its blood vessels and muscles. Common causes of headache include a noisy environment, irregular meals, alcohol, poor posture and prolonged travel. Rare causes of headache are hypertension and brain tumours. Medical advice should be sought for persistent headaches which do not respond to the common analgesic (painkiller) drugs.
