Amphetamines are a group of drugs which stimulate the central nervous system and suppress appetite. Once used as slimming & anti-depressant drugs, amphetamines have widely abused since the 1960s, being snorted or injected. Amphetamines heighten alertness, elevate mood & reduce fatigue. Side effects include high blood pressure, hyper- activity & irritable moods. Prolonged use can lead to addiction, heart problems due to high blood pressure, and psychotic mental states. Users rapidly develop tolerance to the drug's effects. Withdrawal from amphetamines causes depression."
