Burn blisters. Second degree burns to a patient's upper back and shoulder. Second degree or partial-thickness burns involve the epidermis and dermis of the skin, usually forming blisters. Second degree burns are intensely painful and cause swelling. Most superficial second degree burns heal within 10 to 21 days, but deep burns may require debridement and skin grafting.
