Corkscrew hairs on the skin of a patient suffering from scurvy, a deficiency of vitamin C (ascorbic acid). Scurvy is caused by a diet lacking in fresh fruit & vegetables which normally supply the daily requirements of vitamin C. Early symptoms include bleeding gums, followed by subcutaneous bleeding. Left untreated scurvy is fatal. The disease is easily treated by administering vitamin C.
