Raynaud's disease. Artwork of a hand affected by Raynaud's disease. Blood vessels (grey) are shown in the hand. Raynaud's disease is a vasospastic condition, in which the hands or feet develop an abnormal nervous response to cold. A spasm or contraction (illustrated at top right) occurs in the muscle which surrounds the blood vessels in the fingers or toes. This constriction restricts the blood flow and the fingertips become bluish in colour, numb and sore. The duration of the spasm varies. A rare form of this disease results in localized gangrene. Antispasmodic drugs may offer relief.
