Strawberry naevus. View of a raised, red haemangioma or strawberry naevus on the back of a 6 week old baby. Haemangiomas are caused by an abnormal distribution of the blood vessels under the skin. Strawberry haemangiomas appear shortly after birth and enlarge rapidly during the first few weeks of life. At 6 months of age the redness gradually fades and the lump subsides. About 90% of strawberry haemangiomas disappear by the age of nine. Haemangiomas do not usually require treatment. They may need to be removed if they persistantly bleed, or if they are near the eyes blocking vision. Removal is carried out by plastic surgery.
