Mucormycosis infection. Light micrograph of a section through lung tissue infected with a Zygomycete fungus, the cause of mucormycosis (or zygomycosis). Sections of non-septate fungal hyphae (tubular shapes) are seen. Zygomycete fungi are widely distributed in the air, water and soil. They do not normally cause infection, however patients with compromised immune systems, such as those with AIDS, burns patients or patients on steroid therapy may develop the disease. The fungus can infect the lungs, sinuses, gastrointestinal system, or the skin. Treatment is by early surgical intervention and anti-fungal drugs. Magnification: x115 when printed 10cm wide.
