Red blood vessels and nerves enter the eye from this point. The macula, the most light-sensitive region of the retina is at centre left. SLE has caused extensive damage to this retina, seen as white patches particularly around the macula. Haemorrhaging blood vessels are also seen (at upper right). SLE is an autoimmune disorder where the immune system attacks bodily tissues, causing inflammation. This may have fatal results.
