Kidney disease. Light micrograph of a section through an atrophied glomerulus (centre) in a kidney. This is the chronic form of glomerulonephritis, which may develop in adults following a streptococcal throat infection. The glomerulus is a tightly coiled network of blood vessels. When the glomerulus is atrophied, blood flow is reduced, thus the filtration rate is slowed. This results in low urine production (oliguria), high blood pressure and urea retention.
