Urine test for ketonuria. Ketonuria is a condition caused by a diet low in carbohydrates. In such circumstances ketones, the metabolic products of fatty acid metabolism, are not completely metabolized and are found in the urine. The popular Atkins diet, which advises abstinence from foods containing carbohydrates, commonly results in ketonuria. Other causes are pregnancy and diabetes.
