Liver death. Gross clinical specimen of a sectioned human liver displaying cell death (infarction). Infarction occurs when the artery carrying blood to the organ is obstructed. This obstruction can occur due to a blood clot (thrombus) or an embolism. When only a small area of an organ has been affected, as here, it is known as an infarct.
