Thrombophlebitis. Coloured venogram (X-ray) of superficial thrombophlebitis in a vein of the upper leg. Phlebitis is inflammation of a vein, often accompanied by clot formation. This has occurred here with the blockage of the vein seen at upper right (dark area in the white of the vein). At left is the femur (thigh-bone). Thrombo- phlebitis can occur after injury to a vein, can be a complication of varicose veins, and sometimes more dangerous clot formation can occur in deeper veins. Treatment includes a supporting bandage. A dye has been injected into the bloodstream to highlight the vein on X-ray.
