Fibrosis. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of human liver tissue (red-brown) affected by fibrosis. This is a condition characterised by an overgrowth of connective tissue (pale purple). Fibrous tissue may be formed as an exaggerated healing response to injury, infection or inflammation. Specialised structures within the liver are replaced by the fibrous tissue impairing the functions of this organ. A large macrophage (yellow), also known as a Von Kupffer cell, occupies the central part of the frame. Red blood cells and a monocyte (centre left) are also seen. Magnification: x1600 at 6x7cm size.
