Cancer research. Computer display of a TARDIS (Trapped in AgaRose Dna ImmunoStaining) analysis. TARDIS is an immunofluorescence technique, which utilizes fluorescence microscopy. DNA (deoxy- ribonucleic acid), from cancerous cells that have been treated with novel chemotherapeutic drugs, is stained with antibodies. These antibodies show up as green spots and any DNA present shows up as blue spots. By comparing the intensity of the two spots scientists are able to determine the damage caused to the DNA by the drugs. They are then able to develop drugs that target specific cancer cells, decreasing the risk of side-effects to patients.
