Bone cancer. Light micrograph of a section of adamantinoma, a type of cancerous bone tumour. This extremely rare cancer affects the long bones of the arms and legs; this example is from the tibia (shin-bone), which is the most common site. Adamantinomas are slow-growing. They invade the affected bone and may spread to other parts of the body. Affected patients are usually aged from 10- 30. Symptoms include pain and swelling. Often, patients have previously fractured the affected bone, although it is unknown whether this is a cause or a result of the tumour. Treatment is surgical removal of the affected bone, or in some cases, amputation. Magnification unknown.
